Personal Development Tips You Can Use Today (2)

Personal Development Tips You Can Use Today

Your own personal development is what you make of it. You can become anything you want to be if you have the discipline, determination and drive to make it happen. This article will give you some tips on how you can use those characteristics to improve yourself to the level you desire.

When you are trying to improve a new skill, start a new diet, or even a new course, it is important to try and make it something you enjoy. If you are constantly dreading the new part of your life, you will quickly lose motivation and find ways to give yourself excuses.

Do not underestimate the importance of other people. Success is something that keeps you happy as long as you work towards it. Once you reach your goal, you must have someone to share it with to stay happy. Find a significant other that shares your dreams, and perhaps having children could help you too.

Stop and take a deep breath! It really works even though it may seem kind of stupid or silly. Focus deeply on each and every breath that you take and you will feel the stress that you are carrying lifted. Learning different breathing techniques may help but it is not required to benefit from breathing.

When deciding on personal matters it is very important to take the time and effort in choosing the best possible option. It is easy to overlook things by making an impulsive decision. A single mistake can turn out to be a huge disaster in the long run if the situation is not assessed properly.

Take time out of your busy day to listen to what your mind and your body are trying to tell you. If you stop for a little while each day, you are going to find that there are many things that your body is telling you that you were not hearing before, and you can make changes to improve the situation.

Know what you stand for and make any needed adjustments! Identify and rectify your life principles. Everyone has a set of internal principles that guide their daily activities and interactions. These guiding principles are the foundation of our habits, attitudes and values. Bad habits stem from bad values, and a bad attitude comes from a bad or negative set of principles.

Keeping positive influences in your life will keep you working harder at your personal development plan. If your best friend is a couch potato who needs a job, a life, and a shower then you are either going to be influenced into the same life style or dragged down because of it. Surround yourself more with successful role models and people who will recognize your commitment to personal development, this will encourage you more and constantly remind you of why and how you want to improve yourself.

Now that you have seen what you can do to further your own personal development, you can start on your path to the person you envision. It takes a lot of work and the determination to make it happen, but if you set your mind to a goal and don’t look away, eventually you will get there.

Diet Sodas – How They Can Affect Kids

Diet Sodas – How They Can Affect Kids

Many of us have grown up drinking caffeinated diet sodas as an alternative to sugary regular sodas. We figure this is a better choice rather than loading our and our children’s bodies with large quantities of sugar. Whilst diet sodas do help us avoid a sugar overload (which can lead to weight gain) we should also be aware of the effects of caffeine contained in many cola flavored diet sodas.

Caffeine is a diuretic causing the body to excrete water. The net result of drinking several caffeinated drinks during the day is to deplete, rather than replinish the body’s fluids. Where such drinks ar the primary source of daily fluid intake, the net result may be a loss of water which may actually lead to dehydration. It is not uncommon for many of us to be unknowingly dehydrated!

Here are some common symptoms of dehdration. If you recognise any of these symptoms you may be able to improve your health by simply drinking 6 to 8 glasses of pure, fresh water a day.

1. The most common symptom is headaches. A major function of water is to flush toxins from the body. Your brain is 75% water, so even being slightly dehydrated can cause headaches.

2. Poor concentration/fatigue. If you body can’t get rid of the toxins it will struggle and you will feel less energetic as your body diverts energy to deal with the toxins.

3. Constipation. Your body will divert water to more essential functions and as a result your stools will be harder and more difficult to expel.

4. Reduced urine output or dark urine. Did you know that up to 200 litres of water is passed through your kidneys daily? Without a fresh supply of water for the kidneys to filter waste products out of the blood, your urine will become darker.

5. Furry tongue or bad breath. If you don’t have enough water passing through the mouth to wash away food particles, bacteria can proliferate and result in that ‘furry’ feeling or bad breath.

6. Skin. Your skin should feel elastic. When you pinch the skin on the back of your hand it should snap back instantly.

Two Mindfulness Exercises

Two Mindfulness Exercises

Mindfulness exercises let you “tune in” to yourself. Distractions are let go, and your brain power is increased. The exercises help you think more clearly and concentrate better. The best news is that they are easier than you might think to learn.

Easy Mindfulness Exercises

Anytime you are stressed, stop, and carefully watch yourself to identify what’s bothering you. You may be expecting something bad to happen, or perhaps there is an argument going on just below the surface of your consciousness, or you’re worried about something, or in pain in some way. Notice everything you can.

This self-observation is crucial. It will get easier as you do it more. You’ll start to realize just how many things are going on in your own head, distracting you.

Now deal with these mind-irritants. Make the phone call that’s on your mind, take an aspirin, apologise to whomever you were fighting with. You can write things on tomorrow’s to-do list, to get them off your mind. And if there’s nothing you can do right now, tell yourself that. When you do this exercise, you’ll feel less stressed, and more able to concentrate on the tasks at hand. You can have more brain power today.

A Better Mindfulness Exercise

Sit down, relax and breath deeply through your nose. Let your eyes close and be aware of your breath going in and out. Move your attention to your body, one part at a time, noting sensations of cold, hot, tight, sore and anything else you identify. After a few minutes, start listening to sounds in the room, without thinking about them. Just listen, while still maintaining an awareness of your body and your breath.

In ten minutes or so, or when it feels right, open your eyes and look around as if you are seeing for the first time. Let your eyes rest on an object for half a minute, examining it without talking about it in your mind. Then move to another object, and another, while still maintaining an awareness of your body, your breathing, and any sounds. Just stay in this state of mindfulness for a few minutes, until you are ready to get up.

When you are aware of your body, breath and immediate enviroment, you are more fully “in the moment.” Your mind is in a receptive state, with fewer mental distractions that can prevent clear thinking. An exercise like this before important mental tasks will give you greater brain power, specifically more focus and concentration. Today is a good day to learn something new. Why not try one of these mindfulness exercises?

7 Things to Know About Altitude Sickness

7 Things to Know About Altitude Sickness

~Take My Breath Away!~
You’ve already know about AA, AAA, ABC, ADT and so on. If you’re going to the mountains, you might want to add AMS. It stands for Acute Mountain Sickness or more commonly, Altitude Sickness. You say, why are you bringing up sickness when I’m going on the trip of a lifetime – isn’t that just bad karma? Think of it as a vaccination – sort of like a trip into the Amazon jungles. You wouldn’t think of going there without, say… thirty or more shots, would you? So if you’re going to the high altitudes, why not prevent sickness!
~What Causes Altitude Sickness?~
Mountain scenes are indeed breathtaking. As you reach higher altitudes, barometric pressure decreases so every breath you take contains fewer molecules of oxygen causing you to take more breaths to get the oxygen you need. Of course this happens when you exert yourself walking up any hill, but at low altitudes, the shortness of breath usually resolves itself soon after you rest. Not so in a high altitude.
As the amount of oxygen in your lungs decreases, the blood becomes less and less efficient at acquiring and transporting oxygen, so no matter how many breaths you take, you are unlikely to attain a normal blood level of oxygen. It takes your brain a few days to figure out it has to breathe more.
Although everyone reacts differently, anybody can get AMS, even those who are physically fit, with lots of high altitude experience, young or old, male or female.
~The Easiest Way to Prevent Altitude Sickness~
The most common reason for getting AMS is directly related to how quickly you ascend, so if you plan to go high, your best guarantee is to go slow. If that’s not possible, at least know the symptoms and what to do, and you should be able to feel better quickly and avoid the severe, life-threatening forms. Drink lots of liquids, exercise moderately, eat small meals high in carbohydrates and low in fat and take a few herbs.
Other important steps to take include avoiding alcohol, sleeping pills and narcotic pain medications in more than modest doses.
~Medical Definitions of Altitude~
High Altitude:
5000 – 11500 ft
Very High Altitude:
11500 – 18000 ft
Extreme Altitude:
Above 18,000 ft.
~Signals that your brain hasn’t caught on yet that you’re not at sea level~
Nausea
Dizziness
Insomnia
Headaches
Bloody nose
Fatigue or weakness
Loss of appetite
Confusion
Staggering
~How to decrease the effects of AMS~
Ascend slowly and let yourself acclimate to each altitude.
Drink plenty of fluids – water and juice.
Avoid alcohol.
Minimize caffeine intake.
Decrease salt.
Eat a low fat, high carbohydrate diet.
DESCEND! (But only if its really bad).
~What the Doctor Says~
According to Dr. Lynne Drakos, acupuncturist and doctor of Oriental Medicine, a must for altitude adjustment is Siberian Ginseng. She also suggests eating foods high in iron, including molasses, green leafy vegetables, beets and red meat for the moisturizing value they give the body.
We have found taking doses of antioxidants seems to help also.

Diet Soda Drinkers

Diet Soda Drinkers

How do you know if you are getting enough water each day? This is a really important question because many of us have deprived ourselves of water and have become so accustomed to living with less than what our body requires, we don’t recognise the symptoms of thirst.
The most common symptom is headaches. A major function of water is to flush toxins from the body. Your brain is 75% water, so even being slightly dehydrated can cause headaches.
Poor concentration/fatigue. If you body can’t get rid of the toxins it will struggle and you will feel less energetic as your body diverts energy to deal with the toxins.
Constipation. Your body will divert water to more essential functions and as a result your stools will be harder and more difficult to expel.
Reduced urine output or dark urine. Did you know that up to 200 litres of water is passed through your kidneys daily? Without a fresh supply of water for the kidneys to filter waste products out of the blood, your urine will become darker.
Furry tongue or bad breath. If you don’t have enough water passing through the mouth to wash away food particles, bacteria can proliferate and result in that ‘furry’ feeling or bad breath.
Skin. Your skin should feel elastic. When you pinch the skin on the back of your hand it should snap back instantly.
Some people trying to control their weight, drink bottles of diet sodas each day. Often these beverages contain caffeine, which is a diruretic causing the body to excrete water. In fact the net result is often dehydration. So if you are a ‘heavy diet-soda’ drinker, and you recognise these symptoms, you may be able to improve your health by simply drinking 6 to 8 glasses of pure, fresh water a day!

Stress Less, Breathe More

Stress Less, Breathe More

I must start our by stating that I believe there is good stress and bad stress. As in most things in life, there are opposites: good and bad, yin and yang, light and dark…(you get the idea). Let’s start with the good kind and then work our way along the continuum.

When you are put in a situation where you are challenging your capabilities, whether it is competitive sports, public speaking, or starting your own business, you are having an intimate experience with good stress. Without these challenges, your life would remain stagnant, albeit comfortable. If you are content to live life just below the surface, great; but maybe you just need a little encouragement or a fresh perspective.

Try replacing your fear with a heightened sense of awareness. Look through eyes which are not placing judgments on situations or people, and simply observe. Practice this relaxed state of mind, and notice how your environment (and the people within it) becomes more supportive.

You could easily become adept at coming up with reasons why you shouldn’t face a challenge or make a change, and the truth is sometimes your rational mind has a point. Just be careful when your comfort zone gets too lived in–the more you take roots there, the harder it is to get out. Taking an intelligent risk when the timing is right can turn your life from ordinary to incredibly fulfilling. In doing so, you’ve taken a very positive step toward tackling that other kind of stress—the bad kind. I am sure most of you are familiar with bad stress, the kind you can certainly live without. Some examples of this bad stress might include:

* you just got a phone call from your boss saying he wants to see you right away; he was not speaking with his “happy voice.”

* your dog just deposited a smelly package on your clean carpet, and you are expecting the appraiser to inspect your home first thing in the morning.

* you have a date tomorrow night with “the one,” and you just discovered the making of two massive eruptions–one the left side of your nose, and one front and center on your chin.

No doubt, there are many more examples—some having to do with paying the mortgage, and maybe some having to do with the upcoming 4-week visit with your misunderstood, the glass is not only half-empty, it’s dark and cloudy, brother. Just thinking about these topics can cause your mind to escalate out of control with worry and doubt about your abilities, and extreme anticipation at the thought of your next gin and tonic. Stop the madness, now!

First thing you need to do is, breathe; that’s right, breathe. The idea is to focus on something other than discursive thoughts. So, actually, you are not just breathing, you are also FOCUSING on the breath coming in through your nose, filling your diaphragm, and then releasing the breath out of your mouth. When you blow this air out, try releasing whatever unpleasant thoughts you have out with your breath. Just let it go, like lint you’ve pulled out of the bottom of your purse; blow and release. When you breathe in again (yes, keep breathing), picture pure positive energy coming in through your nose, and filling your diaphragm. And this time when you release the breath, picture that pure positive alive energy, drifting out, bringing a loving essence to everything it touches.

Like with anything else in life, in order to get the benefits of some thing, you really need to commit to it. One of the strongest ways to manifest success (whatever that means to you), is to believe. Children offer wonderful inspiration when it comes to belief. They use their imagination in such a way that not only entertains, it creates a life where the stresses of the material world do not affect them.

Now I know what you are thinking: “Yeah, that’s great. But, I am an adult, with adult responsibilities. I have to go to work, cook the food, and clean up the dog poop!” Fair enough—however, this does not mean that you, like the child, cannot use your imagination. Many new age books these days like to use the word “visualize.” I like to use the word “imagination,” because it has a connotation of a sense of fun. And, adopting more fun in your life is essential to releasing the bad kind of stress.

Let’s focus, now—we were talking about relieving bad stress, right? Remember we were breathing? Good! Okay, so once you are at the point where you are filling your body with that pure positive energy, imagine the energy transforming every single cell in your body. Like an internal massage, your organs will be touched with a renewed energy. Try and really experience this sensation. Embellish it and color it. Realize your creative energy, and let it work through you.

This whole imagining or visualizing process may not come naturally to some of you. I understand, because I used to think life was pretty serious business myself. And, the more I thought about how serious it was, it seemed the more life kept throwing me serious stuff to prove I was right. I used to watch other people—laughing, having a good time, and think they were pretty frivolous. It wasn’t long before my judgment turned to envy. Then, finally, I started to think, “Maybe appearing a little silly is not such a bad thing.” The more I played with this thought, the more I found myself smiling. Sometimes I even made myself laugh out loud, because of something stupid I imagined myself doing. I don’t think the people who saw me smiling knew I was just having silly thoughts; they actually thought I was being friendly—can you imagine?! If you knew me back then, you would know that this would have been quite a stretch. The funny thing is, when people started smiling back, I actually did become pretty friendly.

During this whole change of attitude, I did continue breathing. No, I didn’t forget. I guess the point is bad stuff is bound to happen. What I would lovingly like to recommend is for you to take a few deep breaths before you react. The situation you are faced with will become a whole lot more manageable if you allow your imagination to take you to a positive place. And just as if you were approaching an angry person on the street and you looked at them straight on with a genuine smile, look at your undesirable situation with the same positive energy. Nine times out of ten, that angry person will be much less angry, and that difficult situation you are facing will be much less daunting.

Mouthwash Basics You Must Know

Mouthwash Basics You Must Know

Aside from brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, one way of keeping the mouth clean is through the use of a mouthwash. Rinsing your mouth with a mouthwash does not only aim to give you a fresh and clean breath. Instead, it also protects your teeth from tartars and plaques and protects your gums from infections and bacteria. There are other benefits of the using the mouthwash. On the other hand, it also has some drawbacks.
The Benefits
Cavity Prevention. Using a mouthwash after having brushing can get your teeth be protected from cavity. Some mouthwashes have some amount of fluoride and this can make the teeth stronger and less prone to plaques and cavity. The fluoride can reduce the demineralization of the teeth that can lead to the slower formation of cavity.
Gums Disease Prevention. Gum diseases can be prevented by rinsing the mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. The antibacterial mouthwash can flush away the bacteria inside the mouth that are causing the gums to be inflamed. The periodontal disease can be prevented as well by rinsing your mouth regularly with a mouthwash.
Canker Sores Relief. A mouthwash can also sooth a canker sore so that you will be relieved for a moment. The mouthwash can detoxify the affected area, flushing away the germs that are irritating the gums and the tissues. With this, you will feel a little bit more comfortable.
Pregnancy Safety. Using a mouthwash can reduce the risk of having a periodontal disease. And, this can make your pregnancy safer. The periodontal disease can affect the baby inside the mother’s womb because of the bacteria from the gums that can be transmitted through the bloodstreams. By preventing the periodontal disease to form, you are also guarding the safety of your baby.
The Drawbacks
It can irritate more the canker sore. A mouthwash with the right alcohol content soothes a canker sore because it flushes away the bacteria that are irritating it. However, if the alcohol content of the mouthwash is very high, it can indeed flush away the bacteria but its alcohol content can irritate more the affected area. Thus, you have to make sure that your mouthwash has the right alcohol content.
At the same time, the mouthwash does not maintain a fresh breath for a long time. A mouthwash can give you a fresh breath but it is for a short time only. If you have a poor personal oral hygiene, your bad breath can be smelled later on when the mouthwash is no longer effective. Thus, this is not recommended for fresh breath maintenance. Still, the best way of maintaining a fresh breath is by brushing the teeth regularly and eating the right kind of foods.
The bottom line is that the use of mouthwash should not be treated as a substitute for brushing your teeth. Even if you are using a mouthwash, you should still brush your teeth regularly. For best protection, brush your teeth every day, floss it regularly, and rinse your mouth with a mouthwash before going to bed so that you will have a fresh breath when you wake up in the morning. It is useless to be gargling with a mouthwash when you do not care to brush your teeth. As a conclusion, you still need to brush your teeth before using the mouthwash with the right alcohol content.
